Today I had a very exciting thing happen. Well, it’s probably not exciting to most people, but it was to me. I got my very first response on Twitter from a semi-famous person!
There are these two guys called Paul and Storm who do geek comedy and songs. They are buddies with Adam from Mythbusters and Wil Wheaton, among others. The four of them formed Wootstock – or w00tstock, depending on where you read it – a show all about geeks and geek humor. I follow them mainly because they showed up a lot on Wil Wheaton’s stream and are pretty funny. On Twitter, they go by the handle @paulandstorm and they tweet a lot.
Now, I follow about 60 people and have significantly less followers but Paul and Storm have over 15,000 followers and some of them are people I follow (don’t worry if you didn’t get that, I wrote it and I barely do.) So while they don’t have hundreds of thousands of followers, they’re nothing to sneeze at. The cool thing is, this morning they tweeted, I answered, and they tweeted back! Here’s how it went:
@paulandstorm: [S] If it looks like a duck, swims like a duck, and quacks like a duck, then it’s probably a duck. Or a robot duck. (Brackets mean Storm is posting.)
@freshatforty (me): Did Grant Imahara build a robot duck??!!
@paulandstorm: [S] No, but I’m hoping he’ll take the bait.
Ok, so it’s not a very erudite conversation, but I got a response. How cool is that?
But wait, it gets better. On a lark I decided to post this:
@freshatforty: Looking forward to the robot duck by @grantimahara as proposed by @paulandstorm.
That bit got retweeted four times. Once by Paul and Storm, and three times by people I don’t even know! In the immortal words of Wil Wheaton, I have to say, “Squeee!” I’m giddy with the thrill of it all. Yeah, it’s geeky. Yeah, I’m so not being cool about it. I don’t care; it was a fun thing in an otherwise dreary day.
If Grant builds a robot duck, I am totally taking credit.
